Xbox 360 Blue - Microsoft's Next Suggested Move
Now that Microsoft has officially backed out of the HD DVD market, discontinuing their Xbox 360 HD DVD player, there needs to be a next step. While the jury is still 'officially' out on the HD DVD vs. Blu Ray war, its fairly apparent that the Blu Ray technology is going to become the next standard and HD DVD is the new beta max. So, here is what Microsoft needs to do.
Introduce the Xbox 360 Blue, along with a buy back program supported by Microsoft through major retail chains, to help people ease the pain on the wallet when they upgrade. But there are a few things I suggest they keep in mind, and implement in this newest Xbox 360. Along with the standard features of an Xbox 360 Elite, the new Xbox 360 Blue should have, at a minimum, these additional features:
- Built in Blu Ray DVD player
- Built in wireless connectivity that supports the N standard
- Built in support for Bluetooth headset connections for Xbox Live communications
Of course, these are just my suggestions. The buy back program needs to be there as an incentive to choose the Xbox 360 over the PlayStation 3, because as is, even though the current game line-up for the PS3 is limited, it is an enticing piece of hardware because of its range of capabilities and built-in support. I, personally, think that is the most retarded thing i have ever heard. I own a PS3 and and 360, and i think the Xbox 360 is better as it is. My Ps3 is basically my glorified DVD player as i only own one game and uses it only to play Blu-Ray Discs. My Xbox 360 basically does what i bought it to do. Play Kick Ass Games, and does it amazingly well.
I think it makes perfect sense. If people are saying they only are buying a PS3 for a blue-ray player than why not let MS do this right? They should have done it this way before. I also really want to use a blue tooth headset after all it is 2008. Nice write up and good ideas.
I have all of the consoles, and I appreciate the comment. The Xbox 360 has better games, and it has a much better online community, but my point here is that Microsoft should make an effort to release a version of their Xbox 360 that does not require tons of add-ons to be a complete device that still has the current and future standards within it. (think of the additional wireless adapter, the additional wireless headset if you want it, and the additional high definition player)
In order for the Xbox 360 to continue to be sought after and seen as a superior product over the PS3 I think they should do something. I don’t want a console with a handful of accessories, I want it built in. But then again, it is just my opinion.
Microsoft did this right…waited to see which Hi-Def format war would win. Since I have yet to buy a Blu-Ray player, or the HD DVD add-on for my Xbox360, I am able to now invest in either Blu-Ray player, a PS3 or the next itteration of Xbox 360 “Blue” ray they come out with. Imagine if Microsoft threw a built-in HD DVD player in their units way back! You’d have to upgrade to their next 360! At least now, *my opinion*, I can choose either Xbox’s next total pkg unit or add a PS3 to my collection.
Just buy a PS3. Why pussy foot around with a “me-too” system when you can have the real deal. 2008 will be a breakout year for PS3.

You’re stupid … If the 360 had a built in Blu-Ray player, the 360 games wouldn’t play. It would have to be an add on (just like the HD-DVD drive)

Hmn – a buyback program maybe is too much … what i would like to see (and this is not really related to the demise of HDDVD) is a “hifi” version of the x360. An x360 is a dvd-like package, with bluray built in and professional audio/video options! (oh – and silent!).
This seems like a big turnaround for the HD-Blu war. Blu-ray wins, but I wonder how this will affect the Xbox 360 and its players in general. The problem for us 360 owners is our warranty. I got my Elite in July of 2007, and if they start rolling out major format upgrades and stuff, peple like me will be screwed…we won’t be able to exchange an RRoD’d console for an upgraded one. I hope Blu-ray doesn’t become a necessity, but if it does, 360 owners should be entitled to free upgrades or at least lower prices.
OK, perhaps the term ‘buy back’ is a bit much, but there should be a monetary incentive for current 360 owners was my point.
Oh, and while we’re on the topic let me say one more thing I’d really love to see, but don’t expect…. the Xbox 360 to use a standard laptop hard drive like the PS3 does, why does it have to be proprietary?
I don’t want those from my console, I just want good games. That is why I have an Xbox 360: it has the best games.
This is one of the reasons of why the 360 will lose this generation of console wars, again. Those of us who understand technology and follow it developments could see the difference between Blu-Ray and HD DVD from the off. Yes there is probable too much space on blu-ray disc for the film and all the special features alone in its current state, but when you up it to HD quailty it fills the HD DVD that same quailty doesnt come close to filling a Blu-Ray, you get much higher quailty image, sound exerything infact. Yes at the moment the 360 is the leader in the market, but when you think that in total it roughly had a 2 year relese head start on the market and is already paying for it. Almost all the first and second productions of 360 had to be recalled due to the red ring of death, resulting from colling faliures. This whole idea of a buy back system for the new 360 blue will be a huge hole for money from microsoft that is not finacilaly viable for them and i do not belive they will over this service when push comes to shove. This sounds to me like Microsft atempting to keep its customers on board for the time being to stop them switching sides before they’ve milked them for as much moeny as they can. This year belongs to that of the PS3 it planned ahead for this and thus is already ahead of the Next-gen entertainment system.
Ok first of all, a BluRay drive would in fact play 360 games just like a BluRay drive can play any DVD.
I don’t think Microsoft should jump on the BluRay bandwagon, but should instead keep pushing downloadable HD video. I have a PS3 and the quality of a BluRay disk is excellent, but it’s NOT VISUALLY BETTER than HD video from XBox Live Video Marketplace.
There are only three problems with the DL video: the biggest is that I can’t BUY movies off XBox Live Video Marketplace, I can only rent them. I can buy TV shows, but I can’t buy movies. Why? I would pay $20 for ownership of a HD movie, and that would undersell BluRay with absolutely zero inventory and production costs.
The second problem is that DLV does not include closed captioning. For some odd reason my wife has difficulty understanding people who speak with strong accents so we generally turn captioning on, but we can’t with DL video. Short sighted and they need to fix this.
The last problem with DLV is that you don’t get all the extras like director’s commentaries, “the making of” etc. which they could easily give you. Easily fixable by bundling the smaller videos along with the main video in a single purchase.
If they address these three issues, I would never buy another BluRay disk. I would love to be watching Beowulf tonight for example, but I won’t buy the DVD because it’s not HiDef, I won’t buy the HD-DVD because it’s a dead format, I can’t buy the BluRay because it’s not available yet, and I can’t buy the HD version on XBox Live because you can’t buy movies on XBox Live. Most likely I’ll buy the BluRay when it comes out, but ONLY because of the three reasons I listed – I would MUCH prefer to own it digitally and not have yet another disc to worry about.
i think that the 360 is amazing, and Microsoft knows how to keep it simple by continuously expand what is important, which is the games. for aren’t they game consoles, not dvd players ??? to me if i want to play games that kick ass and win in graphics and are amazing, im going witht the 360. They are allowing you to create your own videogames come holiday season again in november when two of the most amazing games also come out in the next series. Im talkin about gears of war 2 and fable 2. These games will never be beaten. PS3 has the resistance games on the PS3, but there will never be anything as good as gears of war 2. and xbox live is next gen my friends. blu ray is all about expensive hardware and expensive discs, and xbox live is being turned into a built in everything. they are teaming up with netflix so that you have a huge variety of movies to download. Along with tv shows. The future is all about less things to buy, and that will be the key. Downloading, not blu ray. blu ray is no different in my opinion then dvd. i dont even care for HD-DVD. there is no difference, and unless you have HD tv, you cant enjoy the blu ray experience. so to me its a waste, and i think that the future will be won by microsoft only because they seem to playing there cards right with every aspect of the game. they are taking over Sony’s game franchises. So that means less games now, and less games in the future. Also Microsoft is currently working on the handheld xbox, and they are developing plans for the new xbox 720, just wikipedia it, and you will find that microsoft has already planned that the xbox 720 will have voice recognition, just like the new “Sync” for cars, built into it, where you will be able to tell it different commands. And digital dwonloads are far from taking off. if a movie is like 30 gigs…itll take more than 90% of the world to download it in more than 4 days. come on, and yea there is no guarantee with all the retarded unstable windows computers that go crashing on everyone. You had an argument with the games. as of 2008….name more than one 360 exclusive thats worth playing. GOW2 will be kick ass thats for sure. knock knock. i have a 360 as well, and its not that i dont play it. The movies you download are A) not i 1080p, B)It doesnt have the sound or picture quality. pixels alone dont determine quality. C)downloading an HD quality movie that fits on a blu ray, with the sound etc is like 25 gigs n up…GOOD luck downloading that in a matter of hours.

I think all consoles have their audiences and the games for each group of people. Now back to the original issue I think blue tooth capability in the 360 would be a plus. I think a monetary compensation from Microsoft would be a good idea but I don’t think it would happen. But I really like the idea of Microsoft coming out with a consoled that had all the things Jason bought up….
Yes I totally agree, a buy back program needs to be available, but I really doubt that will happen. Now as for the package details stated in your post, I too would love to see them as well! Lets hope Microsoft is thinking along those lines as well.

I dind’t really take the time to read all of the comments posted and if I sound like I’m repeating what someone else has said, then I am sorry. Now, to the point! I own a xbox360 and I love it! I love being able to play online and the large xbox live community that most games have. However, if MS is going to introduce blue-ray, it needs to be for this reason and this reason only, larger disk space. I think MS would really benifit from this and not have to worry about how to compress software onto an 8gig dual layer disk verses a 30gig blue-ray disk. Software developers would be free to create games that they really want to put out without worring about space limits. Being able to play blue-ray movies is a just a plus. I do agree with the buy back option, considering MS is only going to refurbish the old systems with blue-ray drives and firmware to support it. Let’s not forget about play back of all the standard 360 games being sold, now. All features and point system intact! So, if anyone from MS is reading this, take notes.
I think it would be great. Some of us just want one gaming device, and that’s great that many have whichever one they want, I would rather have the XBox. However, I’m not going to spend alot of money on something that is not going to offer me the technology of the future. It needs to have Blue Ray because many of us, like myself, already have an HD DVD in our TV’s. So why would we want something we already have? Please Microsoft, put the Blue Ray in the XBox 360, and I will buy one! Thanks!
