Light gun games have been popular since the days of Duck Hunt on the original NES, so it's no surprise that the PlayStation 2 also supports light gun controllers. Learn how to set up your TV to play light gun games on PS2 and get general tips for improving your aim.

Information in this article applies broadly to all light gun controllers compatible with the PS2.

The Best PlayStation 2 Light Gun Controllers

The GunCon 3 controller from Namco is considered the best light gun for the PlayStation 2 because it is compatible with LED television screens. If set up correctly, it works flawlessly with all PS2 games that support gun controllers on most TVs.

Unlike the GunCon3, which uses LED sensors for motion tracking, the original GunCon and the GunCon 2 rely on traditional light gun technology. Therefore, these controllers work best with older LCD TVs.

The GunCon controllers are no longer in production and may be expensive to purchase online. There are, however, knock-offs and cheaper models available that offer adequate accuracy and responsiveness.

How to Improve Light Gun Accuracy

When using one of the older GunCon models, the lighting of the room you are playing in can affect the controller's accuracy. For best results, turn off all overhead lights and close any blinds if playing during the day.

You may also need to adjust the brightness of your TV while calibrating the gun before starting a game. How far away you are from the screen doesn't matter as long as you stay in the same position. If you move around too much, your aim will be off.

Can One Player Use Two Guns?

Namco's Time Crisis and a few other games allow one player to use two light gun controllers at once, but you're better off finding a friend to play with. When playing alone, it's best to hold one gun with two hands.

General Tips for Light Gun Games on PS2

Most light gun compatible games include a training mode for target practice. Each game has slightly different controls, so learn how to reload your weapon. This is typically done by aiming away from the screen and pulling the trigger, or by pushing the button on the back end of the controller.

Here are some additional pointers for using a light gun controller on PS2:

  • Hold the gun with both hands to improve your aim.
  • Keep an eye out for barrels or other objects that can explode and cause damage to enemies.
  • Just as you would in a fighting game, observe your opponents' attack patterns and look for openings. When they run or reload, take advantage of the opportunity and empty your clip.
  • As a general rule, focus on the closest enemy first.

Light Gun Cheat Codes for PS2

Several games that support gun controllers have cheat codes, but you must use the PlayStation 2 controller to enter them. There is no way to input cheats with the GunCon 3.
