Homebrew is a term commonly associated with video games or software that runs on a console when the author is a single person. Not limited to software made by one person, homebrew also refers to any game or software that has been programmed for a console or handheld device that is not developed by an authorized developer or publisher for the platform.
Common examples of consoles and devices that run homebrew are the Sony PSP, the Nintendo DS, the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, PS2, etc.
In order to use homebrew video games or software it is often required that the console have a modchip, custom firmware, or other type of circumvention in order to bypass the normal software checks in place. This is not always the case, however.
