Resolution - Video Games Term Defined

From , former About.com Guide

Definition: In basic terms resolution describes the quality of an image. In video games it can mean much more. Specifically, in terms of PC games the resolution is the setting that the game will appear on screen, in terms of size and appearance on your PC monitor. Some typical resolutions on PC monitors are 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024, but many monitors also go much higher. Resolution also applies specifically to images and bitmaps used in games, and their quality level (or dots per inch ratio), however, for the sake of keeping things simple we really don't use that reference at Video Games Strategies.
Also Known As: image quality, screen size
Common Misspellings: rez, rezolution
Examples:
Via the control panel you can set your resolution to suit your preferences. The game's resolution was poor, and thus we rated it a bit lower due to the choppy look of the graphics.
