First Off, What Is Kinect?
I'm not going to bore you with the details, because it appears you're looking to download the Kinect driver, so I assume you already know what Kinect is supposed to do. If not, see the Kinect review at our Xbox site.
If you're interested in downloading the open source Kinect camera driver then see the project's git page.
Just remember, as coder Hector Martin wrote on the driver's ReadMe file; "Horribly hacky first take at a Kinect Camera driver." So, you may or may not be able to make your microwave accept motion commands to heat that Hot Pocket.
Of course, that's not to say that you won't be able to, but we've only seen what some individuals can do with the hardware and driver in a weekend... let's see what projects begin to appear in the coming months.
What Can You Do with the Kinect Driver?
Honestly, we're not sure where the limits are just yet, but so far here are some of the things that have already been done. Keep in mind, that at the time this article was published the Kinect hardware was just recently released. People from all types of industries, and hackers in general, have created robots that accept motion commands, 3D drawings, capture images in 3D, perform electronic puppet shows (seriously, see the link to the blog post in the next paragraph), and this is only the beginning.
See this blog post for more information on the topic. This was my original response to the news of the Kinect driver.
Have You Done Something Down-right Cool with Kinect?
Have you done something amazing with the Kinect? Send in a video (a link to a YouTube video is just fine, no need to email any files). Perhaps we'll highlight your ingenuity for all of our audience to see. Contact me here or via Twitter @AboutGameCheats.
